Guide To Getting A Warranty Manufacturer Dealer After Market

If you buy a car privately, you can buy a tailored personal 'after market' warranty from the likes of Warranty Direct and ABS, in much the same way as you would purchase an insurance policy.

Various levels of cover are available, depending on the newness and complexity of the car. The most comprehensive cover is meant to act as an extension of the manufacturer's warranty for new or nearly new cars and is especially useful for vehicles imported from Europe.

More basic policies offer minimal cover of engine and transmission, as well as things like water pump and starter motor. To qualify a car will normally need a current MoT test certificate and proof of a service by a VAT-registered garage within the last 12 months.

Premiums are based on the type of car, its specification, size of engine and predicted annual mileage.

You may find it difficult to get cover on more exotic cars or performance models like the Subaru Impreza. We suggest you go to a main dealer in such cases.

In terms of items covered, there are subtle differences between different warranty companies but all will insist that you follow the car's recommended service schedule and that it remains totally unmodified to validate the policy.

It is also important to establish whether you get the option as to where repairs are carried out. Some companies allow customers to take their car to the main dealer while others will charge for this privilege.

If you are buying warranty yourself, find out exactly what's included before signing on the dotted line. Use our Checklist and Score Card as a guide.
